Go Global - PIHMS Graduate Travels the World with Four Seasons

Nov 26, 2020

Amanda Wynands, former New Plymouth Girls High School student, graduated PIHMS 12 years ago and has experienced the most amazing life! She wants students to know that leaving NZ and travelling the world with hotels is so worth it. Here's her story...

"Since graduating PIHMS in 2008, I've been lucky enough to travel and work all over the world. When I graduated, I moved to Sydney where I worked for the Four Seasons Hotel as a Reservations Agent, Telecommunications Supervisor and then Reservations and Telecommunications Assistant Manager. I had completed both of my industry placements on Hamilton Island. After 3 years in Sydney, I decided to move back to Hamilton Island as Housekeeping Supervisor...I missed the tropics! 2 years later, Four Seasons offered me a job in Canada, so I left my Tropical Paradise for a Winter Wonderland and moved to Whistler for 3 years as Reservations Manager.

At the end of 2017, Four Seasons transferred me to the USA where I worked for our brand new property - Four Seasons Hotel Downtown New York until January of this year when I was promoted to Senior Reservations Manager overseeing Four Seasons Hotel Downtown New York and another brand new property - Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street, Boston. I now call Boston my home and I love it.

Thanks to my time at PIHMS and then working for an international hotel company, I have friends all over the world! Every city or country I've travelled to I've had someone to catch up with and show me around - Paris, London, Budapest, Hawaii, LA, Vegas, Anguilla and Barbados to name just a few. The nice thing about working for Four Seasons is that we also get to stay for free (or on a super discounted rate). Imagine telling your non-hospitality friends that you get to stay in 5-star hotels around the world for free, it's kinda cool!

I learnt a lot at PIHMS and can honestly say that I have used every single skill over the last 12 years, most of the time without even realising it. Although 2020 has hit us hard, the hospitality industry is definitely going to land on its feet because those of us that work in it, really truly care. I learnt that at PIHMS too. I can 100% say that I would not be where I am today without studying at PIHMS. I actually don't think I would be the person I am today if I'd chosen a different career path.

PIHMS definitely changed my life for the better. It was hard work, but totally worth it"
