Live, study and learn our world class student campus hotel facility
Students are totally immersed in an hotel environment. They will be living in twin share hotel rooms. Meals will be served in our La Vista Restaurant onsite.
Learning is a combination of lecture style delivery in business subjects and practical hotel operations; whereby students gain experience in roles within the hotel school from food & beverage, front office, housekeeping & management
Paid Hotel Internships at PIHMS throughout your study
Students partaking in the Level 5 Diploma will undergo one six month paid Hotel Internships, with potential earnings of $15,000 - $25,000 during your study.
Placements are sourced by the PIHMS industry placement team, in leading hotels throughout New Zealand and Australia. Please note placements in Australia are only available for New Zealand Citizens.

- A further year of study will enable you to gain your Level 6 Diploma
- 120 credits
Entry Requirements:
All applicants are interviewed. Students under 17.5 will be assessed on a case by case basis. Students are required to have completed year 12 and successfully attained NCEA level 2 with at least a total of 80 credits (or equivalent for overseas students).
- 60 credits must be obtained at level 2 or above
- 20 credits can be obtained from any level
- The Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must also be met
- Should students not gain the required numeracy and literacy credits from Maths and English then the remaining numeracy and literacy credits from other subjects will be assessed on a case to case basic
Overseas ESOL minimum of IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 213 (comp adaptive) or 550 (written). Level 5 Students with IELTS 5.5 will be required to take business communication elective.

Course Outline
Year 1
Weeks 1-10 |
Students will be introduced to the food & beverage operation within the PIHMS hotel environment. Learning will be of a practical nature with students responsible for delivering the food & beverage requirements of the hotel school. Duties include a la carte table service through to restaurant manager, barista training, bar management and with valuable food production experience gained through work in the PIHMS kitchens. |

Weeks 12-21 |
Students will be introduced to several areas of academic business studies including: Marketing, Management, Tourism, Business Evaluation, Computing, Communications, Applied Hospitality and Research. |
Paid Hotel Internship |
With the assistance of the PIHMS industry placement team students will have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained in the forst 6 months at PIHMS. The Hotel Internship focuses on developing skills in the area of food & beverage in paid positions within the hospitality industry. After successful completion, students will graduate with a New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management Level 5. Successful students will be able to progress on to the Level 6 and then the Bachelor Degree - it is highly recomended that students invest the extra study to earn the Diploma and ideally the Degree as it can significantly improve career prospects. |
Year 2
Weeks 1-10 |
Students will be introduced to the rooms division operation within the PIHMS hotel environment. Experience will come from working within the front office and housekeeping departments. |

Weeks 12-21 |
Students will continue to build on the business knowledge gained in Year 1 with a continuation of the business subjects of Marketing, Tourism, Management, Business Evaluation, Applied Hospitality and Research. Innovation and Event Management is introduced with the students undertaking a hospitality event within the PIHMS environment. |
Paid Hotel Internship |
This second Hotel Internship continues to develop the skills gained during the first 6 months of Year 2. The placement focuses on developing skills in the area of rooms division. Students will take up paid positions in either front office or housekeeping. After successful completion, students will graduate with a New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management Level 6. Successful students will be able to progress on to the Bachelor of Applied Hospitality & Tourism Management - it is highly recomended that students invest the extra year of study to earn the degree as it can significantly improve career prospects. |
Year 3
Weeks 1-21 |
Business knowledge is enhanced within the core subjects - Marketing, Management, Tourism, Business Evaluation, Applied Hospitality and Research. The application of knowledge occurs through Duty Management shifts within the PIHMS hotel environment. |
Weeks 22-44 |
Business knowledge is enhanced within the core subjects of - Marketing, Management, Tourism, Business Evaluation, Research and Event Management. This semester has a more strategic focus with the core subjects and also gives students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge through Event Management. In contrast to applying knowledge within the PIHMS environment Degree students are required to work with external customers and deliver a professionally run event. On successful completion of this course students will receive - in addition to the 2 diplomas - a Bachelors Degree in Applied Hospitality & Tourism Management. |

- Directly after graduating the degree programme Judd worked at PIHMS in the marketing and recruitment office and was responsible for Domestic recruitment.

- The education at PIHMS takes a very “hands on” approach, which gives the students an opportunity to experience everyday operations in a hotel. The education at PIHMS is highly recognized worldwide in the hospitality industry, which sets up students for their future careers. During the 3 years you learn certain nuances about the hospitality industry and hotel management, which differentiates PIHMS students from non-trained employees.
- PIHMS for me was not only about education, but also about essential life skills, including social interactions, communications and attaining a certain level of professionalism. After PIHMS I have worked as a manager at one of the best restaurants in New Plymouth, New Zealand, and having formal training and education certainly gave me a competitive advantage in getting that job.
- Although, I did not pursue a career in Hospitality, the skills and experience that I have gained at PIHMS have been very helpful in both my professional and personal lives.
