POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT
The Pacific International Hotel Management School is accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to deliver the Post Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management (Level 8).
The school is dedicated to the hospitality industry in further building the standards of hospitality management within New Zealand and globally. It operates as a co-operative venture between the hospitality industry and higher education institutions. It aims to facilitate the demands for postgraduate or specialised hospitality management training and education to produce graduates with professional and personal skills at the highest level. The PIHMS Postgraduate course contains modules in tourism and marketing management, managerial communications, operations and logisitics, hospitality financial business environment, managing human resources, introduction to research, and applied research. Additional to the theory papers is a 12 week operational training course where students learn the requirements for the successful hotel operations in food and beverage and rooms division – which encompasses housekeeping, room maintenance, front office, night audit, reception and reservations. On successful completion of this part of the course which covers 42 weeks students are placed into appropriate hospitality work environments, where the student contracts with an employer for six months of paid employment. PIHMS requires 400 hours of a successful employment and adhear to the conditions of the employment contract signed with their employer before the granting of the degree of Postgraduate Diploma can be conferred. Graduate are entitled to apply for a graduate visa which entitles them to a further 12 months of work in New Zealand, after which permanent residency can be applied for if the graduate is still employed.
Pathway to Masters
Students who achieve at a high level may on completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Hotel Management, be considered eligible for the Masters Degree in Tourism which is offered in association with Otago University.
Prerequisites/Entry Criteria
Applicants require an appropriate Bachelor Level 7 degree in either business, management or a related hospitality area. Degrees in other disciplines may be considered if the applicant has 2 – 3 years relevant hospitality experience at a supervisory level, or equivalent. In addition, applicants for whom English is not their first language will have an IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent.
Recognition of Prior Learning
In some cases students will have all ready have mastered the required learning outcomes for part of the course. This may be especially in the operations training component of the course. If students can provide the PIHMS academic board with acceptable evidence of mastery of the specified learning outcomes RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) may be granted and students will be assessed as having completed that part of the course. As an example, if a student had already completed three years in the Food and Beverage industry at the supervisory level and can show sufficient evidence to prove this then the student would not be required to complete all the operations training.

Industry Placement
Students will be placed into a paid employment position in industry for a six month period.
Once students have successfully completed 400 hours of industry placement (often over a 10 week time frame) students can apply to PIHMS to have the degree of Postgraduate Diploma Hotel Management conferred. |
