Overview
The International Diplomas in Hotel Management have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the Hotel Industry. The two and a half year programme is divided into 5 semesters. Semesters 1, 3 and 5 are spent on-campus studying the various aspects of hotel management and operations. In semesters 2 and 4, with our assistance, you’ll obtain employment in some of the best establishments in New Zealand and overseas.
Course outline
Semester 1 Business Performance Hospitality and Tourism Business Environment Hospitality Consumer Food Production Operations and Management Food Service Operations and Management Introduction to Research Communication Skills Computing Applied Hotel Services (I): this includes two management shifts and related reports, in addition to an event plan.
Semester 2 The first Industry Placement semester is 800 hours worked in the Food and Beverage operations of the selected organisation.
Semester 3 Business Monitoring and Control Organisational Behaviour Hospitality and Tourism Marketing Rooms Division Operations & Management Facility & Property Management Research Skills Project Management Statistics Applied Hotel Services (II): you’ll perform specific team leadership roles within the simulated hotel (Rooms Division) environment at PIHMS.
Semester 4 The second Industry Placement semester is 800 hours worked in the Rooms Division operations area of the selected organisation.
Semester 5 Managerial Business Evaluation Tourism and Leisure Studies Marketing Management Hospitality Services Management Managing Hospitality Organisations Integrated Project Research Methods Alternative Tourism Liquor Licence (optional) Applied Hotel Management (III): you’ll work a ‘management shift’ as a departmental manager in the PIHMS simulated hotel environment on a week long, full-time shift.
Following the successful completion of the International Diplomas in Hotel Management, students can apply for the six-month degree extension course to complete a Bachelor of Applied Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Entry requirements
All Students must be 17 and a half years of age or older at course commencement. To qualify, you need to complete NCEA Level 2 with 80 credits.
International Students: NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) and English language skill level at the IELTS overall band score of 6.0, on the academic testing module (or equivalent English language test). International students are not required to show their English language test score if they have successfully completed a minimum of two years’ study in English and have completed some English papers.
Mature Students: Must have a satisfactory level of work related industry experience.
